3 Bread Recipes That Don't Require Yeast

While quarantine seems like the perfect time to delve into baking delicious, fresh loaves of bread at home, the current nationwide yeast shortage acts as a pretty major roadblock to most traditional bread recipes.

But don't despair! We have 3 delicious bread recipes to share that require no yeast. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Not only are they just as satisfying as a yeast-leavened bread, there's truly a bread for every mood and meal.

So roll up your sleeves and have your bags of Organic Grains flour prepped and ready to bake up a storm. And, be sure to tag us in all your bakes on Instagram @organicgrain for a chance to be featured on our feed!

1. Banana Bread

Ingredients: organic all purpose flour, ripe bananas, baking soda, salt, eggs, vanilla extract, butter, brown sugar, molasses or honey, walnuts

Time commitment: 1 hour 15 minutes

Why we love it: Finally, those overripe bananas have an opportunity to be the hero of something other than a smoothie.

Tips: The sweeter your bananas, the more ripe the bread! Looking for an alternative sweetener to traditional sugars? Try coconut sugar, monk fruit, maple syrup, agave, or honey.

Make it vegan: Use molasses instead of honey, sub the eggs for a flax egg and the butter for your favorite non-dairy variety (we love Miyoko's or Earth Balance)

2. Beer Bread

Ingredients: organic all purpose flour or organic bread flour, baking powder, salt, butter, beer (lagers or porters are best!)

Time commitment: 1 hour 15 minutes

Why we love it: Beer bread is hands-down the best complement to your favorite soup. With just a few simple ingredients that you likely already have in your kitchen (5 to be exact), it's sure to become your go-to bake.

Tips: Support a local brewery by using your favorite lager or porter for a richer, more robust-tasting bread.

Make it vegan: Sub the butter for your favorite non-dairy variety (we love Miyoko's or Earth Balance) or vegetable oil. Make sure the beer you use is vegan, too!

3. Sourdough

Ingredients: organic all-purpose flour, water, salt

Time commitment: 1 week for the sourdough starter + 1 day for the loaf

Why we love it: Sourdough is having a moment and we're here for it! Not only is sourdough an easy bread to make once you have a starter in motion, it also has a delicious and unique taste. It's the perfect canvas for your favorite sandwiches, croutons, and avocado toasts.

Tips: If you don't already have a sourdough starter in the works, this recipe is going to take about a week to come to fruition.

Make it vegan: No substitutes necessary, this recipe is 100% vegan!
